Nick Maris

Nick Maris, President and CEO

Mr. Maris comes to Somna Therapeutics with fifteen years of experience within the medical device industry with a focus in hospital-based capital equipment and medical disposables.  Nick has served as an executive for large, global medical device firms such as Kendall Healthcare and B. Braun Medical, and has also led new venture, medical device start-ups.  Most recently the COO for a $100 million global division of the Serigraph Corporation, Nick acquired a wealth of international experience in building businesses worldwide as he led business ventures in the US, Mexico, India and China.  Nick received his BA and MBA from Marquette University.

 
Jim Miller

Jim Miller, Vice President of Product Development & Regulatory Affairs

Jim Miller joined Somna Therapeutics as the Vice President of Product Development and Regulatory Affairs with over 30 years of experience in Class III and Class II medical device companies of diverse medical disciplines. This broad experience includes developing and implementing product development, global regulatory, clinical research and quality assurance strategies in alignment with business requirements. By recognizing potential risks Jim was able to obtain worldwide product approvals in accordance with company timelines. Most recently Jim was the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs in a multi-national pharmaceutical and medical device company and obtained multiple product approvals that resulted in revenue growth from $10 million annually to over $250 million.

 
Kathy Duggan

Kathy Duggan, Business Manager

Kathy Duggan joins the Somna Therapeutics team in the position of Business Manager. She brings with her over 25 years of experience in business management with a broad knowledge base of the early stage business environment. The last 10 years were spent managing accounting and human resource services for the start-up biotech company, Prodesse and transitioning the company’s financial, personnel and facility logistics post the multi-million dollar acquisition by Gen-Probe/Hologic.

 
Laura Jackson

Laura Jackson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing

Laura Jackson joined Somna Therapeutics as the Director of Sales-US with over 15 years of experience in business and consumer sales. She spent the past 9 years with Direct Supply Inc. serving in direct selling and sales leadership capacities where she was instrumental in building the sales hiring, training and on boarding programs. There, she also managed multiple selling teams focused in the acute care market that consistently exceeded targets through effective strategic planning and market development. Laura received her BA from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Thomas M. Shannon

Thomas M. Shannon, Board Chairman

Mr. Shannon is Somna’s board chair as well as chairman and lead investor in Oshkosh Nanotechnology LLC (now Shamrock Energy Corporation); Proxim Diagnostics of Sunnyvale, California and Aver Informatics of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He was most recently biotech company Prodesse’s Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Shannon assumed the position of CEO and board member of the start-up Prodesse in May of 2002 and exited the firm after its sale to Gen-Probe, Inc in November of 2009 for a purchase price of $72 million.

In 1996, he founded Shamrock Partners which lead the investment group in Prodesse's initial funding in 2002 as well as the purchase in 1997 of three regional transportation companies in Nebraska and Florida, selling his majority interest in those companies in 2001. Prior to that Mr. Shannon held a variety of senior level management positions in sales and general management as a registered principal for Equitable and its subsidiaries, including Alliance Capital and Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette.

Other boards he serves on include Promentis Pharmaceuticals, Stemina Biomarker Discovery, OKANJO Partners, Inc. and BizStarts Milwaukee. He holds a Finance degree from the University of Wisconsin and earned the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Financial Consultant (CHFC) credentials.

 
Jeff Harris

Jeff Harris, Board Member

Jeff Harris is an investor in and board member of Somna Therapeutics and Okanjo Partners, Inc., early stage technology companies located in Wisconsin. He is an investor and board member of Guy & O’Neill, a Wisconsin manufacturing company, and a director of AMN Healthcare Services, Inc., a healthcare staffing company based in San Diego (NYSE: AHS). He has served as a director of Sybron Dental Specialties, Inc. prior to its sale to Danaher Corporation, Playtex Products, Inc. prior to its sale to Energizer Holdings, Inc., and Apogent Technologies Inc. prior to its merger with Fisher Scientific. Prior to becoming a director of Apogent, Mr. Harris served as Vice President-General Counsel and Secretary of Apogent (formerly known as Sybron International Corporation), a diversified manufacturer of laboratory and life science products for worldwide clinical, research and industrial markets. Prior to joining Sybron, Mr. Harris was an associate with the law firm of Baker & Hostetler. He practiced law in that firm’s Cleveland and Denver offices. Mr. Harris earned a B.S. in Economics from Ohio Wesleyan University, and a J.D. from The Ohio State University College of Law. He is a member of the Colorado, Ohio and Wisconsin Bar Associations. Mr. Harris is on the Board of Brookfield Academy, and is a founder and the Chairman of the Board of BrightStar Wisconsin Foundation, Inc.

 
Mary Beth Berkes

Mary Beth Berkes, Board Member Emeritus

Mary Beth Berkes is a Co-Founding Partner of Linden Capital Partners, a middle market healthcare private equity firm headquartered in Chicago, IL. Ms. Berkes has been involved in healthcare for over 30 years with a focus on medical devices, healthcare services, and the pharmaceutical industry. She has significant governance experience on Boards of Directors of healthcare companies and organizations, and Chair of Audit, Compensation and Organizational Development Committees. She also served on the Limited Partner and Investment Committees at Linden. Prior to founding Linden, she spent 18 years as a senior executive at Bristol-Myers Squibb in the ConvaTec division, a $1.8billion medical device company. She has held senior positions domestically and internationally in general management, marketing, sales mergers and acquisitions, and operations. At ConvaTec, Ms. Berkes led turnarounds of many operations globally and held senior positions where she successfully drove strategic re-alignment and operational transformations. Previously, she worked in cancer and antibiotic research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Currently, Ms. Berkes serves on the Board of Directors of SteadMed Inc. and Somna Therapeutics, and she is the Chairman of the Alverno Board of Trustees. Ms. Berkes received a B.S.N. from Alverno College and an M.B.A. from Kellogg Graduate School of Business at Northwestern University. She lives in Shorewood, WI with her husband, Jim.
